Two years after getting a $100 million commitment from 21st Century Fox to build a mobile-based live streaming platform that could compete with Twitch, the startup Caffeine has scored another coup by partnering with the biggest name in music — Drake.

With buying power of Fox Sports, a Murdoch on the board (Lachlan), and an exclusive contract with Drake, Caffeine is hoping to take its streaming service beyond gamers and sports and become the platform for live streaming entertainment of all stripes.

“The combination of the Caffeine platform with a content studio that benefits from Fox Sports’ expertise in live events and programming will help position Caffeine to deliver compelling experiences in esports, video gaming and entertainment,” said Lachlan Murdoch, in a 2018 statement. “We are excited to partner with Caffeine and build something special for fans in the growing live social streaming esports and gaming space.”

The multi-year collaboration with Drake, terms of which were not disclosed, will debut with the launch of Ultimate Rap League, a battle rap platform which was distributed on its own app as well as through YouTube.

As part of the deal Caffeine will live stream and co-produce new rap battles alongside Ultimate Rap League. It’s the first property that Drake ad Caffeine are jointly bringing to market and presages other live events and content that Drake will shepherd to production, the company said.

“I’ve always loved URL and admired what Smack and his team have been able to create, it just wasn’t accessible. It’s exciting to be in a position where I’m able to bring Caffeine to the table and help provide URL with the tools they need to elevate the viewing experience and make it more accessible to fans,” said Drake in a statement.

Drake has a history with SmackURL. He was called out to battle rap on the platform back in 2015, but declined to show.

Initially created by Troy “Smack White” Mitchell as an event series in New York’s Queens borough, home of hip-hop artists Nas, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Mobb Deep, and A Tribe called Quest, the Ultimate Rap League boasts a roster of boosters including Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip, Joe Budden, Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel, Kid Capre, Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def and Method Man.

“We are proud to partner with Drake and support him as he brings his vision and channel to life,” said Ben Keighran, Caffeine’s founder and chief executive, in a statement. “As a platform, Caffeine gives Drake the freedom to pursue his creative ideas and we are excited about the whole slate of fresh content that he will share with his communities.”

Keighran, a former wunderkind product designer at Apple, has grounded Caffeine’s pitch in the technology that the company has developed from its Silicon Valley headquarters to stream live video. The company boasts that its streams are 15 seconds to a minute faster than other streaming platforms. In addition, the company prides itself on its moderation technologies and use of human moderators to ensure a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, hate speech and racism, the company said.

Caffeine bases its appeal to artists on a revenue share model that is more generous than other streaming platforms like Twitch or Mixer — a model based on in-app purchases and tipping.

Drake may be the biggest artist to join the Caffeine platform, but he’s far from the only one. The company’s roster of talent includes the musicians Offset and Doja Cat, athletes like JuJu Smith-Schuster, Collin Sexton, and Kyle Kuzma and gamers including Cartoonz, Ohmwrecker and Crainer.

I’m Lim Heng Swee, an illustrator based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My mantra is “Doodling a Smile” which aims to make people smile more in their daily life through my art. Recently, I started to explore minimal landscape art and found that the curves and shapes of the land have a lot of similarities with the curve and shape of the cat. I tried to blend the two elements together and the result is surprisingly great. It’s like the surreal view you can see if you landed into a cat planet which is super cool! I have spent 20 days to create 20 illustrations for this series, hope you’ll enjoy them as much as I am creating them. Cheers.

In September 2018, Dean Nicholson had one goal – to cycle across the globe solo – and he began his long journey riding from his hometown Dunbar, Scotland. The 31-year-old Scottish traveler was tired from his nine-to-five job as a welder so he wanted to change his lifestyle and see the world from a bicycle seat.

The trip went great as he traveled south, passing through eight different countries and sharing his wild adventures online. But when he was crossing the Bosnian border into Montenegro, his plans had to change a little bit.

He was going up a steep hill with loud music on when suddenly he heard a desperate meow behind him. When he noticed a tiny kitty, he decided to stop for a second to stroke her and move on, however, the kitty had other plans as she immediately showed her affection. She just couldn’t leave his side and even though Nicholson didn’t plan to take her at first, he soon fell in love with her. Let’s be honest, who wouldn’t?

He knew that since they were in the middle of nowhere and the kitty was desperately hungry, her previous owner had intentionally dumped her. After a trip to the vet, Nicholson named her Nala, after one of the characters in his favorite movie ‘The Lion King’ and took her on his journey.

At first, Nicholson didn’t have a place for kitty so he had to be creative. He made some space in his front basket, clearing out some of his digital equipment and carefully placed her there. In that way, his new companion was granted the best seat in the front and had the honor to lead the way.

Nala quickly showed her loving personality and adventurous soul. She loves traveling and is super relaxed and chill showing no signs of discomfort traveling long distances. Sometimes she jumps out of the box and sits on Nicholson’s shoulder. She attracts everyone’s attention and they always ask for a picture of her.

The two of them became inseparable, traveling from town to town, exploring new places, abandoned villas, and hidden beaches, with Nala being on his shoulder through the good and the bad. Nicholson surely couldn’t imagine a better travel companion!

At the end of the year, Nicholson didn’t want to put their journey on hold, therefore, they traveled through the rain and cold, which caused Nala a chest infection. At that moment, the Scottish traveler realized how much he doesn’t want to lose his little feline so he decided to stay in a hostel for several weeks and wait for her recovery.

With Nicholson’s great care, Nala got well pretty quickly and they set off once again, however, this time with a more secure and waterproof setup for Nala. And of course, their bond became even stronger than ever.

It’s crazy how quickly your plans can change when you meet the right companion. When Nicholson started his journey, he had one vision in his mind – to travel the world with his bicycle – however after meeting Nala, he cares more about her growth than his journey. And it’s just too cute!

Mikiko is a German-Japanese artist currently living in London, UK. She creates fun comics about her daily life with her adorable cat, named Emi, who is probably her “favorite thing in the world”.

Growing up, Mikiko moved around a lot. “I was born in Tokyo and grew up in Hong Kong, Germany, Japan and Belgium, so manga (Japanese comics) were a way for me to connect to home,” she told Bored Panda. “I always drew, but at age 12 I read my first Shonen Jump magazine (action adventure!) and decided, that’s what I wanted to do as a job.”

The artist finds inspiration for her comics everywhere. “Mainly people, music and life in general. Other artists too of course! People are so creative and funny, it’s inspiring.”

Take a look at some of her fun comics below and vote for your favorites!
