These comics are like little guessing games that make you want to guess what happens next. After 11+ years of working as an illustrator, I started a personal project to express my curiosity through comics and post them regularly on social media. It has been a fun journey and it rekindles the curious child in me again.

I hope you enjoy these random ideas amidst the sometimes mundane and challenging days in life. When we are born, we are intensely curious about the world around us. Let’s keep the curiosity in our hearts alive and look beyond what we see!

If you are interested in seeing more of my comics and illustrations, you can click here, here, here or here!

If you are curious about what I will draw next, follow me on my social media to check it out!

Nowadays, there’s a new surge of art emerging in the world, and they’re all related to you-know-what. New music, comics, graphics, even movies are being created about coronavirus, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Nor it shouldn’t. It appears that the quarantine has created at least one positive side-effect, that the creativity of humankind seems to be at an all-time high. We too have tried our hand in it.

During the current coronavirus pandemic, many people still ignore the basic rules of quarantine and personal security. We can say that the ability to preserve the seal of quarantine is a kind of art. This is how Looma agency came up with the idea of “Art of Quarantine” social campaign. Classic art pieces get a new look and teach how to stop the spread of COVID-19 and stay safe. As a part of global campaign #FlattenTheCurve, we aim to share this message and stop the spread of the virus.

Stay home, stay healthy!

When it comes to street art, there are usually two different opinions. One says that we can hardly call it ‘art’ and that it’s destroying the architecture in cities, while the other considers it art that not only colors the grayness of the concrete walls, but also gives more soul to old buildings. However, it is hard to argue about the works of one artist who is best known by the name EFIX since they actually help to ‘restore’ the city. Scroll down for Bored Panda’s interview with the artist!

Love the incorporation of this one 🙂

30-year-old Barcelona-based artist EFIX is not only a street artist, but also a graphic designer and musician. He uses his art to ‘fix’ the ugly cityscape, such as cracks in concrete walls, broken pipes, etc. His tools are his humorous cartoons and illustrations of pop culture characters who perfectly blend into walls and sidewalks, interacting with their surroundings in a completely natural way and making streets look more alive. “I work a lot with Disney and Simpsons characters in general because they have already lived all the lives that any human being can have, so usually, when I see a shape that I like in the street, I take a picture of it and then I look at the photo every day to find an idea. Once I have the idea… I try to move it to the world of cartoons so that it touches my viewer even more easily,” says the artist.

Yes! This is a classic!

His career as a street artist started five years ago when he began to notice the unpleasant features of streets and buildings in Barcelona. That’s actually where his motivation and inspiration come from! EFIX decided to use his artwork to cover these unpleasant features and make his city even more beautiful. “What I like the most about street art is, first of all, the emotions it causes in people in general when I do my street art. I have a city cleaner costume, I put it on and then I sit in the street and watch the passers-by marvel at it, especially the children. It’s such a pleasant feeling to see a smile born on a face. And more personally, I like the feeling of giving something without expecting anything in return. Street art has taught me this value and it’s really rewarding.”

“My street art, in my eyes, wants to be positive street art. That’s why I take care never to damage the supports around me. I don’t want to disturb anything, so I prefer to make ephemeral art—I find that there is a real poetic sense in that. This is why I use materials that do not stay over time, i.e. paper supports. And I use water and flour-based glues to create a texture that dissolves easily in the rain, or if the owner does not endorse my art. Just before creating the work, I take a photo of the wall and come with a meter to take its measurements. Once I have the proportions of the visuals, I go home and I draw it in the right dimensions. At one time, I tried to create my own colors with flower pigments, but I had a little trouble killing the flowers for my personal pleasure. And then, at nightfall, I come to paint my street art so that in the morning, it can work its magic on passers-by,” the artist explains his creative process.

The artist draws popular and easily recognizable pop culture characters that come from cartoons and that most of us associate with our childhood. “I like to use Disney characters because they have a very strong relationship with childhood and touching the viewer at the root is even more beautiful in my eyes,” explains the artist. From The Simpsons, Tom & Jerry, to the Lion King and Mowgli and many more, it surely gives us that feeling of nostalgia and perfectly decorates the streets of Barcelona.

I tawt I taw a puddy tat..

“I started street art because I come from a big art school where you have the designers who end up in Pixar’s studios, for example. But I preferred to be interested in music, personally. Since leaving this school, I’ve had a very strong relationship with the street, where my job at the start was to record street artists and to mix my influences with theirs. I was very quickly influenced by the street because during the day, I recorded them with my microphones and at night, I composed. It leaves you with this feeling that the world belongs to you and you can then rediscover the world as you see it,” says EFIX. “I just want to say that no matter who we are, we have to believe in ourselves because nobody will do it for us. And if you have some crazy ideas, follow your ideas to the end. The world needs creativity, that’s what feeds it!”

As an ’80s kid, I’m often nostalgic about that era. I sometimes hear myself speaking and I sound like my grandparents when they bragged about how things were better “before”.

To be honest, I do think things were better before. Ha! The eighties were an amazing time to live in and anyone who disagrees simply wasn’t around yet.

But let’s be honest, some things are just so much easier now, right? I created this comic series called “Strange things from the past” because some things are better now and some things were better then.

I had a blast making it. It was a little travel back in time and I hope you’ll travel too!

Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by history and archaeology. I think humans perceive the past as a series of events; something like a movie that we can’t really feel or touch. I believe the things that bring us closer to the past are those that truly humanize us – the bodies from Pompeii, the perfectly preserved Inca mummies, the personal objects of those long gone, and more.

I’ve always thought how incredible it would be to see historical events and people the way they actually happened and the way they actually looked. I started Royalty Now in February of 2019, simply as a way for me to see my favorite historical figure, Anne Boleyn, as a modern woman. I wanted to know if she could come to life from the few pale, flat portraits we have of her. I started the account to satisfy my own curiosity about what members of the past would look like if they were standing right in front of me. I’m incredibly thankful for the support and interest the account has received, and can’t wait to see what happens next.

#1

Nefertiti

“This bust of Nefertiti (believed to have been sculpted during her lifetime) is famous for its grace and beauty. Nefertiti lived from approximately 1370 – 1330 BC. She was an Egyptian queen and the wife of Akhenaten, an Egyptian Pharaoh. Akhenaten is famous for his attempt to transition Egypt into a monotheistic society (worshipping only the sun god, Aten), instead of a polytheistic one.”

#2

Julius Caesar

#3

Alexander The Great

“I did some research on his looks and it is recorded that he had curly golden hair and heterochromia (one eye blue and one eye brown or a combo of both), so he was definitely a striking figure.”

#4

Queen Elizabeth I

#5

Agrippina The Younger

“Agrippina the Younger is someone I only recently learned more about but she had a crazy life. She was the sister of Emperor Caligula and the mother of Emperor Nero. I highly recommend giving her a search if you’re interested in that era of Roman history!”

#6

Jane Austen

#7

Anne Boleyn

#8

Madame De Pompadour

“Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, better known as Madame de Pompadour. She first caught the eye of Louis XV at a masked ball in 1745 (it was said that she was dressed as a domino, and he was dressed as a plant) and was his chief mistress thereafter until 1751. Even after she was no longer Louis’ mistress, she was a trusted friend, confidante, and advisor, essentially becoming one of the most powerful women at the French court until her death in 1764.”

#9

Mary, Queen Of Scots

#10

Empress Elisabeth Of Austria

“During her life, Elisabeth (known as Sisi), was known for being beautiful, smart, rebellious and passionate. Definitely worth some digging into if you are interested in late 1800s Europe.”

#11

Louis XIV, The Sun King

#12

Katherine Of Aragon

“This portrait of Katherine of Aragon, wife of King Henry VIII and Queen of England from 1509-1533, has always been my favorite. There are several portraits of her that all range in looks, so it’s hard to tell her true likeness. I think this one captures her piety, meekness, and obedience as documented by historians.”

#13

Louis XV

“Louis XV is lesser known than his predecessor the Sun King and his heir, Louis XVI, but he was the second-longest reigning monarch in French history. I have always known him by his famous mistresses, Madame De Pompadour and Madame du Barry.”

#14

Catherine Parr

“She was the only wife to outlive the king, who was tyrannical in his last years.”

#15

Marie Antionette

#16

Queen Isabella Of Castile

“Queen Isabella of Castile, partner to Ferdinand II of Aragon and the queen who sent Columbus on his way to the “new world” in 1492. “

#17

Emperor Augustus

“Emperor Augustus (born Octavius, the great-nephew of Julius Caesar) was the first emperor of Rome, ending 500 years of republic. He’s an incredibly controversial figure, especially due to the smart and ruthless way he came to power, but he ruled over a time of relative peace in the Roman empire.”

#18

The Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov

#19

Abraham Lincoln

“Abe Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War, its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. He preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the U.S. economy.”

See Also on Bored Panda

“Christina of Denmark, seen here in an original Hans Holbein portrait, lived from 1521 – 1590. Christina was considered as a possible bride for King Henry VIII of England. Christina was not fond of the English King’s reputation, given that he had divorced his first wife and beheaded his second wife. The originator of one of the greatest quotes about King Henry in history, Christina famously said: “If I had two heads, one should be at the King of England’s disposal.” What an amazing denial to a marriage proposal.”

#21

Madame Du Barry

“This is Madame du Barry – the official mistress of Louis XV after his first love, Madame de Pompadour’s death.”

#22

Eleanor Of Toledo

“Eleanor of Toledo was an astonishing woman. Originally from Toledo, Spain, she was a bride to a famous member of the Medici Family, Cosimo I de Medici. Her husband regularly consulted with her on matters of politics, and she even served as consort during his time away from Florence.”

#23

Caligula

“Caligula, infamous brat and Roman Emperor.”

See Also on Bored Panda

“Did you know that Napoleon was most likely 5’7″? That’s taller than King Louis XIV. Some say his perceived smaller stature was due to him looking small in comparison to his huge accomplishments. Others say there was an error when translating his true height from French to English. Who do you think he looks like here?”

#25

Katherine Howard

“Katherine Howard (c. 1523 – 13 February 1542) was Queen of England for only 16 months as the fifth wife of Henry VIII. Katherine was actually the cousin of Henry’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. When they married, he was 49 and she only 16 or 17. Katherine was accused of adultery and executed by the King, ending her short reign as the Queen of England.”

#26

Benjamin Franklin

#27

Henry VIII

#28

King Henry VII

“Here we are with Henry VII, the first tudor monarch, a frequent request from you all. Henry was the last king of England to attain the throne in battle after defeating Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485.”

#29

Mona Lisa

#30

Grace Kelly

“Grace Kelly, American film actress and Princess of Monaco.”

Often referred to as the “Queen of Pop”, Madonna Louise Ciccone better known as Madonna, is one of those celebrities whom you don’t need to introduce because everyone already knows her. The famous American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman has captured millions of hearts, pushed the boundaries of songwriting in mainstream popular music and released many successful albums such as Like a Virgin (1984), True Blue (1986) and Grammy Award winners Ray Of Light (1998) and Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005). Her songs like “Like a Virgin”, “La Isla Bonita”, “Vogue”, “Music”, “Like a Prayer”, “Take a Bow”, “Frozen”, “Music”, “4 Minutes” have reached the top of record charts worldwide.

Throughout her career, Madonna achieved so many things and her works have been praised by many music critics. She has also sparked controversy but still inspired and influenced many other artists. What’s even more impressive is that the now 61-year-old artist is present in the music industry more than ever, creating hit songs and surprising crowds with her amazing performances. But have you ever imagined what she was like before all the fame and before she was a pop music icon?

In 1983, professional photographer Richard Corman didn’t know how famous Madonna was about to become. Nor did Madonna (or at least how big she was going to be). At that time, little did anyone know but when they met in New York, Corman found her to be a fascinating and worthwhile subject for his portraiture photography. She was just a 24-year-old young woman who wanted to become successful and change the world with her art. In his later published photography book “Madonna NYC 83”, he shows the music icon at the beginning of her long musical journey, just months before she rose to fame with her eponymous album.

Most of these photographs are black and white and feature an enigmatic, sexy, edgy and confident Madonna. On the old streets of New York, her gaze is fixed directly at the camera, almost seeing through it. Her charming and powerful energy beams brightly in Corman’s twin-lens Rolleiflex portraits. She’s wearing studded cuffs, double denim, her neck is wrapped in white pearls and her lips are painted red which later became her signature look.

The then 29-year-old Richard Corman later became a famous photographer whose subjects include musicians, actors, artists, athletes, writers and others. He has taken portraits of Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Bill Clinton, Robert De Niro, Paul Newman, Al Pacino, Martin Scorsese, Ellie Wiesel and many more. But still, to this day, his most famous series is “Madonna NYC 83” which released 30 years after and is more relevant to this day than before.

Memphis. A city of infamy, known by many for its reputation as badlands. One regularly touted as one of the most dangerous cities in America. From a wide lens, it appears as a city riddled with crime, inundated in poverty, and poor in repute. Look no further than Memphis’ oft ranked position as “The Poorest Metropolitan City in America.” These are many of the reasons that I said goodbye. When I left, I declared to family and friends that I was finished with Memphis. I emphasized that the city and I would never reconcile. Fast forward 10 years, and I realize that Memphis was not finished with me.

I love the lights!

Let me say, I’ve always had a complicated relationship with my hometown. It is a relationship filled with years of memories with family and friends. It was also a relationship where the good was mostly shadowed by traumatic events in my life while growing up in Memphis. Events that would long be etched into our history together and would keep me at arm’s length. Visits with those family and friends became less regular, and when I was present in body, I was absent in mind. I stopped paying attention to the city, the emotions as distant as the body. I no longer cared about who would run for Mayor, what would become of old buildings, or the state of current affairs.

I like this one. The perspective, the colours and the whole atmosphere are just like something taken out of a comic book. Add a small silhouette of a person and I can totally imagine the close up that follows.

Lovely! It looks like a painting at first glance!

10 years, a few cities, many miles and memories, and a marriage later found me in the Chicagoland area. It was “The Great American City”, and it was “My Kind of Town.” Yes, it was a city of art, a city of experience, a city of people, and a city of endless opportunity it seemed. That came with a price. We found ourselves burdened by the cost of living. Day by day, I saw my spouse’s emotional state spiraling. As much as I loved the Chicago area, I knew my family’s well-being was suffering, and I realized that we needed to act soon. At that moment, I did what I said I couldn’t, I did what I said I wouldn’t. We were going to move back to our hometown: Memphis.

I’ve been to Beale Street. Fun times. But I’m glad I was in a group. This pic is gorgeous!

SUCH a coolpic- nice capture, wonder-full find!

When I first got back to the city, I was here but I wasn’t present. I didn’t venture out much. I kept myself occupied by working on the home, creating from old photography work in places from my travels to Chicago, France, Croatia, Japan, etc. For a time, I lacked the drive to go out and capture new photos. This wasn’t because I thought Memphis wasn’t photogenic. Indeed, I had taken thousands upon thousands of photos in the area when I was younger. To boot, my spouse often described a Memphis that I didn’t recognize, their experience clashing with mine. It still existed. There was still that arm’s length between Memphis and I that was built all those years ago. Five months elapsed before motivation came around, and I finally decided to venture off into the city and try to capture photos. The unexpected happened: I got lost.

I remember this sign. It was used as an example in geometry class, in 1967. 😉

I didn’t recognize my hometown. It was not the city from my past. It was not the Memphis that I had kept at a distance for so long. There had been such a dramatic change. I saw a passionate city, and a growing population of people that realized that it was great and was seizing the opportunity to reestablish Memphis as a popular destination. I saw a city that hadn’t forgotten its past, but it was looking toward its future.

Looks like something out of a sci-fi movie

This series is an ongoing project that focuses on highlighting those efforts and counters the ongoing narrative of Memphis’ poor repute. It is a city with real problems to be solved, but also a city full of opportunities to be seized and one with so much to enjoy. (Don’t get me started on the public transportation system).

For some of us, time is ruthless, for others, it’s more merciful. But there is one thing that no one can escape (except Keanu Reeves, perhaps), and it’s aging.

Dutch graphic designer Ard Gelinck makes time travel possible with his next-level photoshopping skills – some of our favorite celebrities meet their younger versions in front of our very eyes. And it’s not a glitch in the matrix, Gelinck combines most recent and throwback pictures of well-known people from the entertainment world into a single photomontage. And although seeing these icons side by side hanging out with their younger selves might seem a little odd, we are all here for the nostalgic vibe. Do you feel old yet?

Take this exciting trip down memory lane and if it‘s not enough, stop by our previous post with more celebrities here to see how they changed over time.

When we reached out to Ard Gelinck and asked how the idea for this project came about, Ard Gelinck told Bored Panda: “I have been posting photos online for about 10 years. I often challenge myself to create a certain series of images, including this “then & now” series that you see a lot now.” The 45-year-old artist said he has been creative from childhood on. After doing creative education, he currently works as a graphic designer.

Ard Gelinck’s masterful use of Photoshop takes the usual before-and-after comparisons to another level and, in some cases, makes us look twice. The careful matching of colors, lighting, tones, and scale makes the portraits look seamlessly blended although most of the photos combined are decades apart. The artist puts his subjects in a realistic environment where they interact as if two lookalikes or relatives had just met to catch up, except those two people are the exact same person.

Aside from his innovative approach and undeniable editing powers, Gelinck’s work covers what the internet loves the most: seeing celebrities age. Whether growing up on screen or stage, it makes your life and appearance, in particular, food for discussion. Being as classy as they are, most celebrities have aged gracefully like a fine wine; others seem immortal to the point that it‘s difficult to tell which one is a younger version.

Ard Gelinck has found a niche combining famous people with their much younger selves showcasing their transformations over time. This simple yet clever idea and flawless implementation are entertaining hundreds of thousands of people every day. The artist has 184k followers on his Instagram account and still counting. “I was pleasantly surprised when it was picked up by various media worldwide at the start of this year. And indeed, I got a lot of followers. And still counting. Very nice. Nice to see that you can entertain people and show something that makes them laugh and think,” Ard Gelinck shared his success story.

Since 2017, he has created hundreds of captivating photo manipulations that take from 1 to 4 hours to complete, but he “still enjoys it”. The artist has photoshopped many celebrities as if they are posing with themselves in their younger years, such as Madonna, Daniel Radcliffe, Dwayne Johnson, Keanu Reeves, Johnny Depp, Jennifer Aniston, Tom Hanks, just to name a few. “The ideas suddenly come up and the celebrities that I choose are often random. Sometimes an extra when I know when it is someone’s birthday, for example,” the artist said. Looking at these celebrity transformations throughout the years doesn’t only allow us to compare how people age, it triggers memories of our favorite film, TV and music personalities that are no longer among us, we can’t help remembering our own past and looking at our changes, too.

Gelinck’s unique artwork didn’t go unnoticed by the celebrities portrayed in the collages proving it’s the next coolest thing. Impressed by the result, famous people took these edits to their social media, thus attracting even more attention. Among those people were Madonna, Tina Turner, Annie Lennox, Jason Priestley, Ricky Gervais, Robbie Williams, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Douglas, Keshia Knight Puliam, BeeGees, Rob Lowe, Lionel Richie, and many others. Even Gelinck seems humbled about his outstanding achievements, facts speak for themselves – if you are reposted by the biggest names in the industry, you must be doing something right!“I sometimes think what will happen if Jimmy Fallon, Ellen DeGeneres or Kim Kardashian sees and posts my work,” said the artist.

A comfy bed and a good night’s sleep are essential when it comes to brain function. Slipping into a freshly made bed with lush, fresh bedding really can set the tone for how easily you’ll settle into a peaceful slumber.

Once you drift off to sleep, there really is no limit to where your dreams may take you. Sometimes unbelievable and seemingly impossible, your dreams really can have a huge impact; changing your mind on something you were sure you were certain of, making you question what you once knew – the power of dreams can be hugely underestimated.

The Mill Shop wanted to explore what impact dreams have had on the world over the years. We’re not talking daydreams either, but full-blown, from the depths of the subconscious kind of dreams… and we were not disappointed!

James Watson – DNA Double Helix

The discovery and theory of DNA had already been devised, but the shape and structure had eluded scientists. That was until 1953 when James Watson dreamed of two snakes intertwined, paving the way for the familiar double helix structure we see today. However, it was noted by Watson that his scientific masterpiece was almost suppressed; the theory of the double helix seemed so ludicrous at the time, that it was met with hostility and outrage when he first showcased the idea.

Mary Shelley – Frankenstein

One of the most iconic pieces of horror fiction ever written, it’s said that the story of Frankenstein came to Mary Shelley when she experienced a vivid nightmare. At the time, Shelley was just 18 years old and was visiting Lord Byron by Lake Geneva in Switzerland. Whilst there, it was suggested they write ghost stories to while away the hours of the cold, winter days. Unfortunately, Shelley was unable to come up with anything she considered suitable. That was however until one night when she took herself off to bed and dreamt of the monster that defined a genre.

Paul McCartney – Yesterday

Probably one of the most recognized and well-loved Beatles songs, it’s claimed by Paul McCartney that Yesterday came to him in a dream. He awoke to find he couldn’t get a melody out of his head so began to play it on the piano. Convinced he’d stolen the melody from somewhere, McCartney began to question those around him within the music industry, but after a few weeks, no one had claimed the tune, so he developed the chords and accompanying lyrics and the rest, as they say, is history.

Larry Page – Google

You’d be hard pushed to find anyone these days that hasn’t used Google at some point. The biggest search engine on the planet was said to have come to its creator during the early ’90s, in a dream where Page somehow managed to download the entire web and just keep the links. Once awake, Page immediately set about devising the algorithm that would pave the way for the Google we know and love today.

Albert Einstein – Theory of Relativity

Sticking with defining scientific developments, we’d be foolish not to include probably one of the biggest “accidents” there ever was. Known for his vivid imagination, it’s no surprise that Einstein’s dreams were also pretty intense. So much so, it’s said that his most famous achievement came to him in a dream. Once he awoke, he meditated on the idea and soon formulated one of the most famous scientific theories in human history.

Niels Bohr – Structure of the Atom

Probably one of the most significant scientific developments of all time, the discovery of the atom structure redefined physics and what we know about the world around us. At the turn of the 20th century, Neils Bohr had set about understanding the structure of the atom but no configurations seemed to fit. After many attempts to make it work, the worry he was fighting a losing battle started to set in, that was until he went to sleep one night and everything just seemed to fall into place. The idea of atoms fitting a similar structure to how the planets revolve around the sun just seemed to make total sense.
