Often referred to as the “Queen of Pop”, Madonna Louise Ciccone better known as Madonna, is one of those celebrities whom you don’t need to introduce because everyone already knows her. The famous American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman has captured millions of hearts, pushed the boundaries of songwriting in mainstream popular music and released many successful albums such as Like a Virgin (1984), True Blue (1986) and Grammy Award winners Ray Of Light (1998) and Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005). Her songs like “Like a Virgin”, “La Isla Bonita”, “Vogue”, “Music”, “Like a Prayer”, “Take a Bow”, “Frozen”, “Music”, “4 Minutes” have reached the top of record charts worldwide.

Throughout her career, Madonna achieved so many things and her works have been praised by many music critics. She has also sparked controversy but still inspired and influenced many other artists. What’s even more impressive is that the now 61-year-old artist is present in the music industry more than ever, creating hit songs and surprising crowds with her amazing performances. But have you ever imagined what she was like before all the fame and before she was a pop music icon?

In 1983, professional photographer Richard Corman didn’t know how famous Madonna was about to become. Nor did Madonna (or at least how big she was going to be). At that time, little did anyone know but when they met in New York, Corman found her to be a fascinating and worthwhile subject for his portraiture photography. She was just a 24-year-old young woman who wanted to become successful and change the world with her art. In his later published photography book “Madonna NYC 83”, he shows the music icon at the beginning of her long musical journey, just months before she rose to fame with her eponymous album.

Most of these photographs are black and white and feature an enigmatic, sexy, edgy and confident Madonna. On the old streets of New York, her gaze is fixed directly at the camera, almost seeing through it. Her charming and powerful energy beams brightly in Corman’s twin-lens Rolleiflex portraits. She’s wearing studded cuffs, double denim, her neck is wrapped in white pearls and her lips are painted red which later became her signature look.

The then 29-year-old Richard Corman later became a famous photographer whose subjects include musicians, actors, artists, athletes, writers and others. He has taken portraits of Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Bill Clinton, Robert De Niro, Paul Newman, Al Pacino, Martin Scorsese, Ellie Wiesel and many more. But still, to this day, his most famous series is “Madonna NYC 83” which released 30 years after and is more relevant to this day than before.

For some of us, time is ruthless, for others, it’s more merciful. But there is one thing that no one can escape (except Keanu Reeves, perhaps), and it’s aging.

Dutch graphic designer Ard Gelinck makes time travel possible with his next-level photoshopping skills – some of our favorite celebrities meet their younger versions in front of our very eyes. And it’s not a glitch in the matrix, Gelinck combines most recent and throwback pictures of well-known people from the entertainment world into a single photomontage. And although seeing these icons side by side hanging out with their younger selves might seem a little odd, we are all here for the nostalgic vibe. Do you feel old yet?

Take this exciting trip down memory lane and if it‘s not enough, stop by our previous post with more celebrities here to see how they changed over time.

When we reached out to Ard Gelinck and asked how the idea for this project came about, Ard Gelinck told Bored Panda: “I have been posting photos online for about 10 years. I often challenge myself to create a certain series of images, including this “then & now” series that you see a lot now.” The 45-year-old artist said he has been creative from childhood on. After doing creative education, he currently works as a graphic designer.

Ard Gelinck’s masterful use of Photoshop takes the usual before-and-after comparisons to another level and, in some cases, makes us look twice. The careful matching of colors, lighting, tones, and scale makes the portraits look seamlessly blended although most of the photos combined are decades apart. The artist puts his subjects in a realistic environment where they interact as if two lookalikes or relatives had just met to catch up, except those two people are the exact same person.

Aside from his innovative approach and undeniable editing powers, Gelinck’s work covers what the internet loves the most: seeing celebrities age. Whether growing up on screen or stage, it makes your life and appearance, in particular, food for discussion. Being as classy as they are, most celebrities have aged gracefully like a fine wine; others seem immortal to the point that it‘s difficult to tell which one is a younger version.

Ard Gelinck has found a niche combining famous people with their much younger selves showcasing their transformations over time. This simple yet clever idea and flawless implementation are entertaining hundreds of thousands of people every day. The artist has 184k followers on his Instagram account and still counting. “I was pleasantly surprised when it was picked up by various media worldwide at the start of this year. And indeed, I got a lot of followers. And still counting. Very nice. Nice to see that you can entertain people and show something that makes them laugh and think,” Ard Gelinck shared his success story.

Since 2017, he has created hundreds of captivating photo manipulations that take from 1 to 4 hours to complete, but he “still enjoys it”. The artist has photoshopped many celebrities as if they are posing with themselves in their younger years, such as Madonna, Daniel Radcliffe, Dwayne Johnson, Keanu Reeves, Johnny Depp, Jennifer Aniston, Tom Hanks, just to name a few. “The ideas suddenly come up and the celebrities that I choose are often random. Sometimes an extra when I know when it is someone’s birthday, for example,” the artist said. Looking at these celebrity transformations throughout the years doesn’t only allow us to compare how people age, it triggers memories of our favorite film, TV and music personalities that are no longer among us, we can’t help remembering our own past and looking at our changes, too.

Gelinck’s unique artwork didn’t go unnoticed by the celebrities portrayed in the collages proving it’s the next coolest thing. Impressed by the result, famous people took these edits to their social media, thus attracting even more attention. Among those people were Madonna, Tina Turner, Annie Lennox, Jason Priestley, Ricky Gervais, Robbie Williams, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Douglas, Keshia Knight Puliam, BeeGees, Rob Lowe, Lionel Richie, and many others. Even Gelinck seems humbled about his outstanding achievements, facts speak for themselves – if you are reposted by the biggest names in the industry, you must be doing something right!“I sometimes think what will happen if Jimmy Fallon, Ellen DeGeneres or Kim Kardashian sees and posts my work,” said the artist.

Traveling is the perfect medium for experiencing different cultures complete with all sorts of art, music, crafts, and traditions. But visiting other countries is usually not just all roses.

With that idea in mind, artist Malachi Ray Rempen decided to share his traveling experience and situations in the form of fun comics dubbed “Itchy Feet Comic”. This weekly cartoon chronicle is mostly about travel, language learning, and life as an expat. It’s just about any bizarre situation you can imagine yourself in while traveling.

“Itchy Feet Comic deals with two very specific areas: language learning and traveling. One of the things I love about Itchy Feet Comic is the minute observations on the experiences that are so universal that you cannot help but say “That is so true!”” – says the artist.

So scroll the page and have a quick walk around the world!

Aleksei Vinogradov is a Russian freelance digital artist who shares his skills and talent with 120k followers on Instagram. His charming artistic touch, masterful use of pastels and subtle brush strokes create lively portraits full of character and attract the attention of art lovers from around the world. His beautiful works are achieved mainly with the help of Procreate app and a tablet. He studied Costume Design at Saint Petersburg Art and Industry Academy and now, his work is so inspiring and appreciated that he has created his own unique brushes for digital painting.

Aleksei finds his inspiration in music, emotion, and gorgeous female faces. In fact, if you carefully scroll through his feed, you’ll notice his ability to portray women with power, attitude, and energy and evoke emotions as if they were looking at you directly from the screen.

In his series “Famous characters and their pets”, Aleksei draws beautiful portraits of loved pop-culture characters with their ‘spirit’ pets: from Jon Snow with a white direwolf cub to Batman with a little bat or Mistique with a fantasy mini version of herself. Apart from taking these artworks to another level of cuteness, these tiny animals have a symbolic meaning and perfectly represent their owners. Like owner, like pet, right?

Jon Snow (Kit Harington in “Game of Thrones”)

The eighth and final season of “Game of Thrones” finally kicks off on April 14th, so Aleksei Vinogradov has treated us with a tribute to one of the most iconic characters of the series, Jon Snow. Jon (played by Kit Harrington) is realistically portrayed with his loyal albino direwolf pup Ghost, whom he rescues early in the series. Ghost was the only white direwolf and the smallest one of the pack that children of Winterfell have adopted but grew up to be larger than his siblings. His uniqueness resembles Jon’s character and makes for the perfect pet. And while we’ve recently seen Jon (spoiler alert!) embracing his Targaryen heritage and hanging out with dragons, Ghost is said to make his glorious return with a fair share of screen time in the last season, so we will have the chance to explore their special bond.

Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence in “The X-Men”)

Born as Raven Darkhome, Mystique is a mutant from the superhero film series X-Men which has the ability to shapeshift into anyone. Portrayed by the talented and gorgeous Jennifer Lawrence since 2011’s X-Men: First Class, Mystique can mimic exact appearances, voices and even clothing which gives her the power to go unnoticed and manipulate people. The power of youth and regenerative healing along with amazing combat skills make her a valuable X-Men member, even though she hasn’t always been a hero. Her cute pet is a little duplicate of her natural blue-skinned and red-haired form, which Mystique eventually learned to accept. Does a mini Mystique have the superpower to transform into anyone she desires and is it even this pet’s final form? We wish we could get the answers to these questions in the next X-Men movie.

Batman/ Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale in “Batman”)

Not all heroes wear capes, but Batman is definitely one of them. This superhero is a perfect example that you don’t have to be born with unearthly powers to fight for justice. Bruce engaged his physical and intellectual training to create a character that can operate first-class equipment in order to fight crime in Gotham City. The fandom continues an ongoing discussion on who is the best Batman, but Christian Bale definitely is at the top of our, and probably Aleksei’s, list. There isn’t a better pet option for Bruce Wayne than the black creature of the night that actually inspired his superhero alter ego – a bat. He was once scared of bats but turned his fear into a symbol of power and strength.

Leeloo (Mila Jovovich in “The Fifth Element”)

Leeloominaï Lekatariba Lamina-Tchaï Ekbat De Sebat (A.K.A “Leeloo”) is a beautiful human-like alien, one of the Supreme Beings of the Universe in Luc Besson’s iconic “Fifth Element” who was sent to Earth to fight evil. Genetically flawless and superior, Leeloo is the Fifth Element to complete a powerful weapon. The character, portrayed by Ukrainian-born actress Mila Jovovich has superhuman strength, enhanced learning, durability, agility, and incredible combat skills in addition to her most important ability to unite all elemental stones. Despite being the perfect warrior, she still has a childish charm, fragility, and sensitivity. Aleksei Vinogradov imagines a little puppy with glorious orange stripes as her four-legged friend.

Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley in “Pirates of the Caribbean”)

Elizabeth Swann, played by Keira Knightley in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film series, is another famous character that inspired Aleksei. An exceptionally beautiful, spirited and intelligent woman who doesn’t conform to gender and social boundaries and was fascinated by piracy and living at sea from a young age. Elizabeth has strong will and an independent mind, which paired with her masterful use of sward and battle strategy skills made this young woman a brave pirate. Her kitty has a distinctive style that might have been influenced by one particularly eccentric pirate.

Mathilda (Natalie Portman in “Léon: The Professional”)

Natalie Portman’s Mathilda is a 12-year-old girl who finds shelter in professional hitman Léon’s apartment after her family is murdered. Mathilda quickly becomes Léon’s protégée as she seeks revenge for her little brother’s execution. The two strike a deal – Mathilda’s agrees to help around the house and teach him how to read in exchange for hitman skills from the top hit man in New York. Innocent and childish but already carrying deep emotional scars, that make her mature beyond her years she transforms into a well-prepared assassin ready to avenge. Mathilda was a complex character that attracted Aleksei’s attention. Her ‘spirit’ animal is a black cat: very affectionate but true to its wild instincts.

Hellboy (Ron Perlman in “Hellboy”)

It’s no surprise that a pet of Hellboy (or Anung Un Rama) would be a little devil, that’s still cute in nature. The well-meaning half-demon, portrayed by Ron Pearlman in two Guillermo del Toro screen adaptions of the famous comics, seems like the perfect owner to manage this kind of pet. In spite of his demonic and frightening appearance that would fit a true villain, Hellboy is actually a superhero fighting against the forces of darkness. He is a very likable and good-hearted character with a witty sense of humor, and his playful red friend seems to have the same traits.

Malekith (Christopher Eccleston in “Thor: The Dark World”)

Malekith (portrayed by Christopher Eccleston in “Thor: The Dark World”) is the antagonist of Aleksei’s series. Malekith who aimed to transform the universe into eternal darkness was the utterly cruel, ruthless and malicious leader of the Dark Elves. No wonder that his pet is quite intimidating despite being small in size. It seems that the little fella would rule a fair share of the universe if his owner’s plan wasn’t ruined by Thor.

A couple of years ago, we shared a publication with you about a talented Chinese artist Tango Gao (also known as Shanghai Tango) who creates thought-provoking yet still light and fun illustrations without using words.

If you fancy visual and intellectual humor, you don’t need to look anywhere further because you are up for a treat! Tango, whose real name is Gao Youjun, did not stop creating witty illustrations since the last time we wrote about them here on Bored Panda. No, Tango is back with a sequel to his art which is both simple and minimalistic, yet profound in the message it sends.

Tango began creating these illustrations back in 2010 when prompted by a friend, he decided to develop a habit of drawing daily (that’s an excellent habit to pick up). Now, he delights his 108,000 followers on Instagram with light-hearted and sometimes challenging illustrations on daily basis.
