Hair Loves directors on hair
Matthew A Cherry and Karen Rupert Toliver said their film Hair Love, which won for best animated short, was made because they wanted to normalise black hair and make cartoons more diverse. The directors invited black teenager Deandre Arnold, who was told he wouldnt be able to take part in his graduation if he didnt cut his dreadlocks, as their guest.
We have a firm belief that representation matters deeply, especially in cartoons because in cartoons thats how we first see our movies and think about how we shape the world, said Karen Rupert Toliver.
